Who We Are
Founded in 2008, the International Musculoskeletal Society (I.M.S.) is a 501(3)c registered non-profit organization committed to the advancement of health care standards throughout the Middle East.
Formerly known as The Society for Progress & Innovation for the Near East (S.P.I.N.E.), I.M.S. has broadened its focus to incorporate all musculoskeletal disorders including General Orthopedics, Pain Medicine and Rehabilitation, Spine Surgery, Trauma, Pediatrics, Sports-related injury, and much more.
I.M.S.’ mission is to improve patient care for people with pain and disability caused by orthopaedic, spinal and neurological disorders by promoting the most advanced medical techniques and technologies.
The Society is comprised of an association of internationally recognized spine and orthopaedic surgeons and mobilizes a powerful network of faculty committed to this mission.

Meet Our Founding Members
Tony Tannoury, MD
Co-Founder & President, IMS, Boston University School of Medicine, (Boston, MA, USA)
Dr. Tannoury is Chief of Spine Surgery at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He is internationally recognized for developing and patenting Minimal Invasive (MIS) techniques and implants that are widely used worldwide. He is the inventor of Johnson & Johnson’s MIS Spine Portfolio that includes award winning copyrighted systems on the market today, including:
- VIPER® 2
- VIPER® 3D
- COUGAR® LS
Dr. Tannoury has a very reputable and highly attended surgeons’ visitation program through which he has hosted and proctored more than 375 surgeons and professors from major universities and medical centers in the USA and around the world. Dr Tannoury has spent a significant amount of time educating and teaching surgeons, residents and medical students from Brazil, China, the Middle East, and all over Europe. Dr. Tannoury is considered to be an international expert in diagnosing and treating complex spinal deformities. As a result of preservation of spinal muscles and normal structures, Dr Tannoury’s Minimally Invasive techniques have been very successful in treating spinal injuries as well as degenerative conditions. Faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, less postoperative pain and better long term results has kept Dr. Tannoury very involved with injured workers, as well as patients who are unwilling or unable to undergo classic open surgeries. Hence Dr. Tannoury’s interest in working closely with Occupational Health Professionals and major employers from all over New England to develop successful and cost saving protocols and business practices to get the employees back to work more quickly and in manner that respects the injured worker. Dr. Tannoury is also the founder of S.P.I.N.E, a non-profit international organization that educates and trains hundreds of surgeons annually in all aspects of musculoskeletal orthopedic and neurosurgical disorders. Dr. Tannoury is a devoted husband and father and nothing is more important to him than his wife Viviane and their three kids, Jasmine, Tamara and Mark. In his free time, he likes to ski, play tennis and socially network.
Hassan Serhan, Ph.D.
Co-Founder & Treasurer, IMS, Conference Chair: Bioskill Workshops
Dr. Hassan Serhan is Prestige Adjunct Professor at the Bioengineering Department at University of Toledo and was a Distinguished Engineering Fellow at Johnson & Johnson DePuy Synthes Spine and. Prior to his employment with AcroMed in 1995, Dr. Serhan was a research assistant professor at both the Neurosurgery and Orthopedic surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.
Hassan has been the recipient of many awards including, SRS John Moe’s award, ASTM F-4 MOSES Award, , nominated for the SRS Whitecloud Award, and recipient of King Khalid Gold and Silver Medals, Who’s Who in Medicine, Who’s Who Among the Students in American University and Colleges. Hassan is a member of several societies including, North American Spine Society (NASS), Spine Arthroplasty Society (ISASS), American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASME), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) he chaired and co-chaired two of the ASTM subcommittees for spinal implants testing methods.
Dr. Serhan is the co-founder and treasurer of the International Musculoskeletal Society (I.M.S.) formally known as Society for Progress and Innovation for the Near East (S.P.I.N.E.). He chaired the hands-on cadaveric workshops for the past seven year for the I.M.S. annual meetings. He also served on the SRS Worldwide Conference Committee, NASS fellows committee, ISASS Industry Relations committee, CSRS Research committee and at the Board of the Pan Arab Spine Society.
Dr. Serhan has published more than 45 peer reviewed journal articles, 8 book chapters and more than 170 abstracts. He is also a reviewer for several national and international peer reviewed journals and has been invited as a guest lecturer by many universities and research institutes worldwide as a visiting professor and gave more than 110 invited lectures & grand rounds. He is a prolific inventor with more than 100 patents and patent applications.
